Weight Forwardfly fishing glossary
A fly line taper where most of the mass is concentrated in the front 30 feet for easier casting.
Weight-forward (WF) is the most popular fly line taper. The heavier front section (the "head") loads the rod quickly and turns over leaders efficiently, making it versatile for most fishing situations.
Variations
- Standard WF: General purpose, 30–35 ft head
- Long belly WF: Extended head for delicate presentations at distance
- Short head / bass taper: Compact head for turning over big flies
- Nymph taper: Thin, low-stretch for euro/tight-line nymphing
