    Rifflefly fishing glossary

A shallow section of river with a fast, broken surface created by rocks on the streambed.

Riffles are the productive "food factories" of a trout stream. The turbulent, oxygen-rich water supports heavy insect populations, and the broken surface gives trout overhead cover from predators.

    Why Fish Riffles?

    • High insect density = constant food supply
    • Broken surface = less leader-shy fish
    • Oxygenated water = comfortable for trout, especially in summer
    • Often overlooked by other anglers
