Leaderfly fishing glossary
The tapered monofilament or fluorocarbon section connecting the fly line to the tippet and fly.
The leader is the critical link between your thick, visible fly line and your fly. It's tapered from thick (butt section) to thin (tippet end) to transfer casting energy smoothly and present the fly delicately.
Common Lengths
- 7.5 feet: Streamers, heavy nymphing
- 9 feet: General purpose
- 12+ feet: Spooky fish, spring creeks, still water
