False Castfly fishing glossary
Casting the line back and forth in the air without letting it touch the water.
False casting serves several purposes: drying off a waterlogged dry fly, adjusting the amount of line in the air, changing direction, and building line speed for distance. However, excessive false casting is one of the most common beginner mistakes.
Tips
- Limit false casts to 2–3 maximum before presenting
- Each false cast is a chance to spook fish with shadow or flash
- Practice single false-cast presentations for stealthy fishing
